Here’s What You’ve Been Missing

When the same Greek word is translated inconsistently, you lose the theological thread. Watch what happens when it is translated the same consistently.

Ephesians 2:8–9

NIV

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.

Ephesians 2:8–9

HSSB

For because of His favor you are those who have been saved via belief in God’s promise, and this offering of God {is} not because of you—not because of works—so that no one could boast.

Acts 17:31

NIV

“For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.”

Acts 17:31

HSSB

“Just because He has appointed a day in which He is going to judge the civilized world with regard to a declaration of not guilty—with regard to a Man Whom He stipulated, after offering belief in God’s promise to everyone by raising Him up from those who are dead.”

Titus 2:10

NIV

and not to steal from them, but to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive.

Titus 2:10

HSSB

(iii) not those who hold back, but

(iv) those who present all of {their} belief in God’s promise as good evidence,

(b) so that they may put together the teaching that is about the {living} God, our Savior, at all times.

The Power of Consistent Translation

The Greek word pistis (πίστις) appears 142 times in the New Testament. Paul isn’t talking about generic "faith"—he’s consistently pointing to belief in God's specific promise. When a translation uses the same English phrase consistently, you can finally see the theological thread weaving throughout the text. While the KJV sometimes uses the same English word for the same Greek word, most translations do not follow this consistency—but HSSB does in almost every case.

Follow the Author’s Train of Thought

Most Bible translations present complex passages as run-on paragraphs, making it difficult to follow the logical structure. The Harper’s Standardized Study Bible breaks down the text into structured lists with numbered and lettered points wherever there’s a logical hierarchy or list structure.

2 Thessalonians 2:3–10

KJV

3Let no man deceive you by any means: for {that day shall not come}, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; 4Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. 5Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things? 6And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time. 7For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth {will let}, until he be taken out of the way. 8And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: 9{Even him}, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, 10And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

2 Thessalonians 2:3–10

HSSB

3(2) Do not let anyone dupe you in any way at all, that it may not be that:

(a) the apostasy must come first and

(b) the man of the lawless one—the son of eternal damnation—must be revealed,

4(i) the one who is opposed to, and exalts himself over, everything that is called “god” or an object of worship, with the result that he sits down in the sanctuary of the {living} God, presenting himself as convincing evidence that he is God. 5(Do you not remember that I was telling you these things while {I} was still with you? 6So you are aware of what is holding {them} fast now so that he can be revealed in his own time. 7For the mystery of the lawless one is already working in {them}—the one who is only holding {them} fast at this time until he comes out of {their} midst.) 8So then the one who is lawless will be revealed.

(ii) The one whom His Majesty, Jesus,

(a) will put away by the spirit of His mouth and

(b) abrogate by the appearance of His coming;

9(iii) the one whose arrival is in accordance with Satan’s energy: with all

(a) supernatural power and

(b) signs and

(c) wonders—lies—10and with all

(d) {the} deceitfulness of injustice

(i) for those who are going to be done away with

(ii) because they did not accept the love of the truth so that they could be saved.

Dense Paragraphs Hide How Ideas Connect

By breaking the text into structured lists—using indents, numbers, letters, and sub-points—you can instantly see the logical hierarchy. Main points lead to sub-points, which branch into details. This format makes the author’s flow of thought visible at a glance. You can see how each idea relates to the next and how the argument develops. Instead of parsing a wall of text, you follow a clear structure that shows both what is being said and how the writer builds the case. Complex passages—especially Paul’s—become far easier to follow and remember.

Larry Dee Harper

Larry Dee Harper

Larry was called of God on August 17, 1966. Two years later, he was serving in Vietnam as an infantry squad leader in the U.S. Army, Americal Division, 11th Infantry Brigade (August 1968–August 1969). For his service, he was awarded the Bronze Star, the Air Medal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge. After returning home, Larry devoted himself to advanced study in the languages of the ancient Near East:

  • B.A. in Classical Greek – William Jennings Bryan College, 1972
  • M.A. in Old Testament Studies (Biblical Hebrew) – Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, 1974
  • Ph.D. Candidate in Near Eastern Studies – University of California, Berkeley, 1980
  • Taught Biblical Hebrew at both Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and UC Berkeley
  • Translates: Akkadian, Arabic, Aramaic, Classical and Koine Greek, Biblical and Mishnaic Hebrew, and Ugaritic

This combination of academic training and language expertise uniquely prepared him to produce a translation that is both precise and consistent, allowing readers to see what the Scriptures actually say.

In 1980, Larry determined he was not called to academia but to a life of independent research and writing. He began working full-time through The Elijah Project, publishing his findings in newsletters, books, and eventually in free ebooks, which can be found online at voiceofelijah.org.

Larry has devoted over half a century to his calling. The New Testament is complete, the Old Testament translation is well underway, and the updated version of the HSSB App is being developed as a powerful, all-in-one digital study tool. For him, this work is not simply scholarship—it is the fulfillment of a calling he received as a teen and has pursued ever since.

"An amazing study Bible with space to take notes. My kiddos are currently reading this as well and they write their questions in their Bibles as they read. It really helps them and me teach them about what they are reading. The headings for each section are also very helpful, especially when Jesus is speaking in parables. Highly recommend for anyone truly seeking to understand the Truth."
